The payment provider you choose directly affects your conversion rate, your cash flow, and your running costs. Choose the wrong one and you could be losing 20-30% of potential sales because you don't accept the payment method your customers prefer. Choose the right one and checkout becomes frictionless.
This guide is specifically for webshops serving Portugal, the Netherlands, and Spain — the markets we work in most. Global comparisons ignore local payment preferences, which is where the real conversion impact lives.
In the Netherlands, iDEAL accounts for over 60% of all online payments. If your Dutch webshop doesn't accept iDEAL, you are telling the majority of your customers to go elsewhere. In Portugal, Multibanco references and MB WAY are the dominant methods — many Portuguese consumers don't have or prefer not to use a credit card for online purchases. In Spain, Bizum has grown explosively and now processes millions of transactions monthly.
This is the single most important payment decision you'll make: accept the local method or lose the sale. Every provider below supports iDEAL and Multibanco, but the setup complexity and fees differ.
Mollie is a Dutch payment provider built specifically for European e-commerce. It's our default recommendation for any webshop targeting PT, NL, or ES markets.
Why we recommend it:
Pricing: €0.25 + 1.2% for European cards. iDEAL: €0.29 flat. Multibanco: 1% (min €0.10). No monthly fee.
Stripe is the developer's choice — its API is best-in-class, the documentation is superb, and it integrates with virtually everything. But it comes with caveats for the European market.
Pros:
Cons:
Best for: Webshops with custom development needs, SaaS businesses, marketplaces, or any business where technical flexibility is more important than cost per transaction.
Adyen is the enterprise option — it powers Booking.com, Spotify, and McDonald's. The platform is genuinely excellent, with interchange++ pricing (you get the actual card cost, not a blended rate), global acquiring capabilities, and unified payments across online and in-store.
The catch: there's a €120/month minimum processing fee, and the onboarding process is significantly more involved than Mollie or Stripe. For a webshop doing under €50,000/month in volume, the economics rarely make sense.
Best for: Webshops processing €50k+/month, multi-country operations, or businesses that also need in-store payment terminals unified with their online payments.
| Provider | Monthly Fee | EU Card Rate | iDEAL | Multibanco | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mollie | €0 | 1.2% + €0.25 | €0.29 | 1% (min €0.10) | Small–mid EU webshops |
| Stripe | €0 | 1.5% + €0.25 | €0.80 | €0.20 + 1% | Custom dev / flexibility |
| Adyen | €120 min | Interchange++ | €0.10 | €0.12 | High-volume / enterprise |
One final note: always show payment method logos at checkout — before the customer enters their card details. Studies show this reduces checkout abandonment by up to 17% because customers are reassured their preferred method is accepted before investing time filling in their details.
